Measure your own space

A calculator can’t see your shelf, drawer or closet. Its answer depends on the measurements you enter and on the assumptions explained under each result. Measure carefully, measure twice, and check a product’s real dimensions before you buy: the size a bin or basket is sold as isn’t always its outside size.

Follow the instructions and weight limits

For anything you mount, hang or install, such as shelves, hooks, rods or over-the-door racks, the manufacturer’s instructions and weight ratings come first. A page on this site is never a promise that a shelf, a hook, an anchor or a wall will hold a load. Anchor tall or heavy furniture, such as dressers and bookcases, to the wall, especially in a home with children. For anything involving wiring, plumbing or the structure of your home, ask a licensed professional.

Cleaning products

Read the label before you use a cleaning product, use one product at a time, and keep the room well aired. Never mix cleaning products, and keep them where children and pets can’t reach them.

Organizing ideas and routines are starting points. Your home, your family and your schedule may call for something different, and that’s fine.
